Buying and Storing Coffee: Preserving Freshness for the Perfect Cup
When it comes to enjoying exceptional coffee at home (like your favourite East Van Coffee Company - The Drive Coffee…), how you purchase and store your beans makes all the difference in the world.
The journey from roaster to cup significantly impacts flavour, and proper storage can extend the lifespan of your favorite beans.
Buying Coffee: Quality Matters
**Choose freshly roasted beans**: Look for coffee with a recent roast date.
**Buy from local roasters**: Freshness is typically guaranteed when purchasing directly from local Vancouver coffee companies, especially those like The Commercial Drive Coffee Company - or as we like to call it - The Drive Coffee - as the batch sizes are small and it is roasted for just in time delivery... CDCC is also an Italian-style coffee and maintains the traditions of making a great cup - the old school Italian way of making a cup of coffee.
**Consider whole beans**: Pre-ground coffee loses aromatic compounds fairly quickly. Investing in a quality burr grinder allows you to grind just before brewing, preserving those complex flavors. Six of the Eight coffees we roast are in Bean and Two are Ground: We offer 2 Espresso Roasts - The Drive Medium Roast and the East Village Dark Roast Espresso. We also have the Grandview Medium Roasts in Ground or Bean, The Dark Roast Park Drive in Whole Beans or Ground and the Medium Roast Woodland Swiss Water Decaf in Ground for you to try. ALL small batch produced!
**Purchase appropriate quantities**: Buy amounts you'll reasonably consume within a tight period of time - 4-6 weeks maximum. This time frame ensures a fresher cup and is better than stocking up.
Storing Coffee: Protecting Your Investment
**Use airtight containers**: Oxygen is your coffee's enemy. Store beans in opaque, airtight containers with one-way valves that release CO₂ without letting oxygen in.
**Keep away from light and heat**: Store containers in a cool, dark cupboard. Avoid clear containers and never store near ovens, stovetops, or sunny windowsills.
**Skip the refrigerator or freezer**: Temperature fluctuations create condensation, introducing moisture to your beans. The only exception: freezing vacuum-sealed portions of specialty beans for long-term storage.
**Buy Whole Bean Coffee, grind as needed**: Only grind what you need immediately before brewing. This simple habit dramatically improves flavor.
By following these guidelines, you'll experience the full potential of those organic, locally roasted coffee beans from your favorite East Vancouver coffee Brand... The difference in aroma and taste makes these small adjustments to your routine absolutely worthwhile.
