Affogato - An Espresso and Ice Cream Delight...
An affogato is a simple yet elegant Italian coffee dessert that perfectly balances hot and cold elements. The classic version consists of a scoop of vanilla gelato or ice cream "drowned" with a freshly pulled shot of hot espresso. The name itself comes from the Italian word "affogato," which means "drowned."
The beauty of an affogato lies in the contrast of temperatures and textures - the hot espresso begins to melt the cold ice cream, creating a creamy, coffee-infused mixture while still maintaining some of the frozen texture. It's typically served in a small glass or cup.
Affogato originated in Italy, where it's often enjoyed as a light dessert after a meal. While its exact origins aren't well-documented, it's been a staple in Italian coffee culture for generations. The simplicity of combining espresso with gelato represents the Italian approach to food - using quality ingredients with minimal fuss to create something exceptional.
Modern variations might include adding a sprinkle of cocoa powder, chopped nuts, a splash of liqueur (like amaretto or Frangelico), or using different flavors of gelato beyond vanilla.
It's indeed a perfect summer treat - especially after dinner on a warm evening - and strikes a nice balance between dessert and coffee course. The best part is that it's incredibly easy to make at home if you have an espresso maker (or even strong brewed coffee) and some quality ice cream on hand!
Here is the simple recipe:
The bright, vibrant notes of our Organic Medium Roast Drive Espresso create a perfect contrast to cold, creamy gelato in this simple but sophisticated dessert.

1 pint high-quality vanilla gelato or ice cream (if using a chocolate gelato or ice cream - pair that with The East Village Dark Roast Espresso)
4 shots freshly brewed Commercial Drive Organic Medium Roast “Drive Espresso”
Chocolate-covered coffee beans for garnish
Biscotti for serving (optional)
Instructions:
Chill serving glasses in the freezer for 15 minutes.
