The Commercial Drive Pumpkin Spice Latte: Beyond the Café Chain

Looking for a wonderful Fall/Autumn drink. Perfect for those cozy and cold Canadian nights!

History & Origin

While popularized by major coffee chains in the early 2000s, the combination of pumpkin and warm spices dates back centuries. Traditional pumpkin pie spice is a blend that European settlers adapted from Indigenous cooking practices in North America. The modern pumpkin spice latte phenomenon began in 2003 when Starbucks introduced it, quickly becoming a cultural symbol of autumn. The homemade version allows for personalization of sweetness and spice levels, often resulting in a more authentic pumpkin flavor than commercial versions.

Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 2 shots Medium Roast Drive Espresso or 1/2 cup strong brewed coffee (medium roast allows the delicate pumpkin flavors to shine)

  • 1 cup milk (dairy or plant-based)

  • 2 tablespoons pumpkin puree (not pumpkin pie filling)

  • 1/2 teaspoon pumpkin pie spice, plus extra for garnish

  • 1-2 tablespoons brown sugar or maple syrup (adjust to taste)

  • 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract

  • Whipped cream for topping

Instructions:

  1. In a small saucepan, heat the milk, pumpkin puree, and spices over medium heat until steaming (do not boil).

  2. Whisk continuously to create a frothy texture and ensure the pumpkin is well incorporated.

  3. Add the sweetener and vanilla, whisking to combine.

  4. Brew your espresso or coffee and pour into a large mug.

  5. Pour the pumpkin milk mixture over the coffee.

  6. Top with whipped cream and a sprinkle of pumpkin pie spice.

Serving Suggestion: Serve alongside pumpkin bread or ginger cookies for a complementary fall treat.
